📢 Update: Modern Compatibility Fix for Beach Head 2000, 2002 & Desert War (2003)

Hi everyone,

We’re excited to release a long-awaited update that improves how all three Beach Head games run on modern systems — including Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The original Beach Head titles were built more than 20 years ago using DirectDraw, a graphics technology that Windows no longer supports properly. As a result, many players experienced issues such as:

Black screen on launch
Tiny, unscaled window in the corner
Crashes when entering gameplay
Missing menu graphics
Incorrect fullscreen behavior
Stuttering or performance drops

To solve this, we now bundle DDrawCompat v0.6.0, a widely used and trusted open-source DirectDraw compatibility layer.

🛠 What’s New in This Update

✔ DDrawCompat v0.6.0 is now included with the game

We now use DDrawCompat for both the menu and game executables of all three titles:

Beach Head 2000
Beach Head 2002
Beach Head: Desert War (2003)

No file moving, no manual patches, no external downloads — everything works immediately after installing the game.

⚙️ Included DDrawCompat.ini (Recommended Default)

AltTabFix = noactivateapp(1) DesktopColorDepth = 16 DpiAwareness = app LogLevel = info VSync = on DisplayAspectRatio = display DesktopResolution = 640x480

These settings were tested across multiple Windows 10/11 builds, GPUs, and display configurations.

💡 Why This Approach Works

DDrawCompat v0.6.0 provides:

Accurate DirectDraw emulation
Correct fullscreen scaling
Proper handling of legacy color modes
Fixes for mouse behavior and window focus
Better frame pacing with VSync
Support for modern GPU drivers

This is currently the most stable, modern-friendly solution and works reliably for all three games.

⚠️ Known Limitations (Transparency)

These games were designed for 4:3, 640×480 displays.
Modern monitors may show pillarboxing, stretching, or minor scaling artifacts.
DirectDraw is deprecated.
While DDrawCompat works around Windows limitations, rare systems may still need small adjustments such as disabling fullscreen optimizations.
Some antivirus programs may show false positives.
DDrawCompat hooks into DirectDraw to restore compatibility — this is normal for graphics wrappers.

Windows 11 Delay on everything

Gun doesnt fire on command nor weapon switching. It takes about 1 minute for it to recognize commands. Any fix on this?

As promised and once again, we are thrilled to announce an update for the original "Beach Head Desert War" game, enabling mouse sensitivity controls for a more tailored and authentic experience, reminiscent of the original. We took the time to do this with pleasure, recognizing the joy it brings with its brilliant simplicity.

Upon launching the game, you'll notice a newly introduced mouse sensitivity slider. This feature intelligently adapts to your Windows settings, offering a personalized and refined gaming experience. To mitigate any potential issues with excessive mouse speed, we've established a conservative default that closely mirrors the original settings on most systems. For those seeking a more customized touch, feel free to adjust the settings to match your preferences. It's important to note that while the default aligns with the original, minor adjustments may be needed based on your system for an optimal gaming feel.

We sincerely apologize for not giving these classic old games the attention and time they deserve earlier. As a small team with limited resources, we couldn't attend to everything, but we are committed to staying and providing you with the support you need now. Windows 10+ Compatibility Fixed!!

We're thrilled to share that we've resolved the compatibility issues, and the game should now work seamlessly on Windows 10-11. Could you please give it a try and let us know if it works for you?

If you encounter high mouse sensitivity, you can adjust it in your computer's mouse settings. We're also working on a launcher that will automate sensitivity adjustments for the proper experience. If you come across any visual glitches or have further questions, please reach out to our support team.

Wont't load

Tried running from Windows explorer (or in Launch), will go to screen where it asks New Game, Load Game etc. Try to run New game, says "loading", but goes back to same Screen, New Game etc. Worked before upgrade in Windows 11

Is this the same as beach head 2000 and 2002? Same devs and all?

Hello I've played BH2000 and BH2002 a lot when i was younger. I would like to know if it's the same games and if it's from the same company/devs. Thanks
