Dementia is a condition where a person’s thinking and memory decline to the point that it begins to affect how they function in everyday life. It goes beyond normal forgetfulness. It can change how someone understands conversations, recognizes people, makes decisions, and responds to their surroundings.

The most common cause is Alzheimer's disease, though there are other forms. What they share is a gradual breakdown in how the brain processes and holds information.

It does not progress in a predictable way in the least. There's variety in the types of dementia. Hence the focus in many colleges on Person centered care and if you have or know a person with a loved one living with dementia, you know how stigmatizing it can be. Some abilities fade while others remain for a time, which can make a person seem present one moment and confused the next. Over time, it affects not just memory, but a person’s sense of self and their ability to live independently.

That's one of the first things you learn about the condition. But to see it done in game? is.. impressive. There are clear signs that line up with cognitive decline. Disorientation, gaps in recall, moments where the environment seems more stable than the person moving through it. It has the feel of early to mid-stage dementia, the kind you might associate with something like Alzheimer's disease, where the person can still move through spaces and function on the surface, but the internal map is starting to glitch.

What’s almost funny, in a very clinical sense, is how composed it all looks. If this were real, a caregiver or a psw if they were in a long term care facility would have gently redirected them about five times already, offered a seat, or started implementing the PACE system (how mentally alert, agressive, agreeable in communication or environmentally aware a resident is) when interacting with them.

It is not played for ridicule, though. And it's not a reason to suddenly rob them of dignity. I started this review with the intention to segue dementia into a game review but I think I'd give a mini lecture instead. In Canada, most of that structure runs through the Alzheimer Society of Canada, and the first thing they make clear is this: you are not supposed to figure this out alone.

If someone is newly showing signs or has just been diagnosed, the system pushes early connection. Local Alzheimer Societies offer step by step guides, education, and direct support because the earlier someone engages, the better they can prepare for what is coming . That includes understanding the stages, planning care, and adjusting daily life before things get unstable. And under all of it, there is a constant push toward one idea. Plan early, ask for help, and stay connected. Because dementia isolates people fast if there is no structure around them. The main character moves through memory like someone with no support system actively intervening. No redirection, no care plan, no one stepping in to ground them. Just uninterrupted progression through fragments.

From a gameplay perspective, that makes sense. It gives you space to explore, interpret, and build meaning.

From a healthcare perspective, it is almost surreal. So what the game ends up doing, intentionally or not, is isolating dementia into a purely internal experience. It turns it into something quiet, almost navigable, something you can walk through alone if you are determined enough.

And that is the one place it breaks from reality.

Dementia is NOT something people survive through clarity. 12 Memory Lane gives you the rare perspective of being inside the mind without interruption.

Real life is everything that interrupts it. 10/10 game. Would recommend. Make sure you turn the graphics to the lowest though.

Albeit while the controls can be a little clunky here and there, this game includes a really creative game mechanic that involves testing your recorded reality versus the one you behold with your own eyes. Truely fun experience!
