Kobold Story : Trenchcoat Adventurer has a ton heart. The devs had a clear vision that they executed with the tone and they executed it flawlessly, every aspect of the game has a lot of charm from the enemy designs to the item filler text. This combined with the unique inventory system makes the game a joy to play through.

There are a couple systems and odd design decisions that hold the game back.

Hunger: Each of the three Kobolds has its own hunger, but the hunger's only function is to act as a second health bar that one depleted begins to drain the kobold's health. It would be more interesting if the level of hunger effected each Kobold in small ways, maybe they stop regenerating health if below a certain point, if they are well fed they have slightly higher stats something small to make the system feel more important.

Ignorable damage system: Each weapon and spell in the game has a type of damage, with some types doing more or less damage depending on the enemy that is being attacked. But I found through my playthroughs that it didn't really matter all too much, the best strategy is to just bring the weapon with the most amount of damage and if there was an enemy that was resistant to its damage type it didn't make enough of a difference to make me change weapons. Also the inventory is just too small to carry around multiple different weapons to get every type of damage, especially on higher difficulties where food is so important.

Single-used level designs: There are a lot of traps in the game, trap-doors, fireball shooters, pressure-plates that open door, etc. All things that could be used to make combat more interesting. But some of these elements are only used once and then not expanded on. The fireball shooters and pressure plates are introduced fairly early then never seen again. Adding them to later levels could be a way to make levels more engaging and the player could drop the enemies into pits or into fireball traps, helping them avoid combat in that location if they play well, but not getting the loot that the enemy drops. There is also a room with invisible walls that create a maze but in that same room before going in the maze you are given a potion that lets you see invisible walls, essentially making the invisible walls pointless.

Even with these problems the game is a blast to playthrough, and as the game moves out of early access and these issues are fixed the rest of the game could be as good as the art style. As the game is right now I still recommend giving it a shoot then coming back as it is updated. As for me I am very much looking forward to the future of the game.
