I've been playing Project Gorgon on and off for about 8 years now and it always felt a little rough around the edges. It's been polished so much over the years in terms of gameplay, graphics, and performance. I'd say it's still fairly niche but if you're a fan of old school MMOs with a little more modern design, this is probably the best out there right now.

It's essentially a sandpark, a mix of themepark and sandbox - which is pretty rare for the genre. It's all about exploration and horizontal content more than typical endgame. Most MMOs tend to go to one side of the extreme or the other nowadays. There are TONS of quests, but they give you very little experience or rewards. The main point of quests is to earn NPC Favor which allows you to get more items or learn new skills. The gameplay loop is basically:

1. Quest: Go fetch me this item.
2. Wait, you need 15 Alchemy to make that item.
3. Oh, one of the ingredients only drops in a certain dungeon.
4. To unlock this dungeon you need to do this quest.
5. To do this quest you need to gain favor with an NPC.
6. Rinse and repeat but with different limitations on how to get things done.

It can feel a little all over the place at times, but it's fun if you're capable of remembering lots of little details. The skill system is pretty unique, I think there are nearly 30 different combat skills and 50+ other skills that range from the usual Leatherworking, Tanning, etc. to more niche ones like Flower Arranging, Cheesemaking, Mycology, etc.

Also, you can be a bunch of different animals, like a cow or a rabbit. So that's cool.

I didn't find Project Gorgon because it was trending.
I didn't see it on Twitch.
No one recommended it to me.

I found it by accident--filtering games on Steam by system, of all things. The trailer started, and within seconds I was no longer in 2026. I was standing in Camelot Hills.

Not visually, not literally--but spiritually. That same quiet countryside. That same sense that the world existed whether I was there or not. The same feeling that if I walked far enough in the wrong direction, something would kill me, and the game would not apologize.

What I didn't realize at first was that I hadn't stumbled onto an old game. I had stumbled onto a new one--and somehow, a continuation of a design philosophy I thought had gone extinct.


I came into Project Gorgon with intent. I wanted to be a Wizard.

There is no "Wizard" button.

And yet, I am one.

I cast spells. I manage mana. I read books. I brew potions. I wear robes. I prepare before danger and retreat when I must. The game never asked me to declare a class. It simply watched what I did and allowed that to become true.

In Project Gorgon, identity is not selected--it emerges.

I saw someone in chat casually say, "I guess I'm a cartographer now."

And everyone accepted it. Because of course they were. They had explored, learned the land, understood it better than most. No respec. No profession switch. No permission required.

That single sentence explained the entire game.


There is no global XP bar.

You don't level "your character." You gain experience in skills--by using them. Fight with fire, Fire Magic improves. Pick mushrooms, Mycology improves. Cook meals, Cooking improves.

That single decision quietly dismantles two of the worst problems modern MMOs struggle with: power leveling and bots.

There is no single bar to fill. No optimal loop to automate. No way to drag someone through content and "finish" them. Progress is fragmented, contextual, and personal.

You don't rush. You become.

People complain that everything is expensive in this game. They miss the point. Cost restores meaning. When guilds are expensive to create, guilds matter. When gear is earned slowly, it's valued. When nothing is handed to you, everything feels deliberate.


One of the early complaints I saw was that the world feels empty. You can walk for a while and find only flora--no enemies waiting every ten seconds to be farmed.

To a modern MMO player, that's a flaw.

To anyone who lived through early Dark Age of Camelot, it's pacing.

Combat in Project Gorgon is not background noise. It's a destination. Danger is clustered, intentional, and often contextual. You choose when to risk your life. And when you do, you prepare.

That preparation matters.

I can already imagine it clearly: a party riding on horseback for half a day to reach a dungeon. Camping outside. Eating food for buffs. Playing music. Dancing. Talking. Then, when everyone's ready, delving in together.

That ritual--that space between action--is something modern MMOs optimized away. And in doing so, they erased the conditions that created stories.


Guilds aren't free. Titles aren't trivial. Even server launches are meaningful.

The developers have already given out "I was there" titles to early players. No power attached. Just acknowledgement. Provenance. History.

And then it happened.

I was standing in chat when one of the developers was just... there. Not announcing. Not moderating. Talking. Joking. Answering questions. Being human.

After about fifteen minutes, he said:

"Alright. Break time's over. I need to get back to work on server number three. I hope you guys enjoy the game."

And that was it.

No sarcasm. No toxicity. No backlash. Just appreciation. People thanked him. Wished him luck. Let him go build the thing we were all standing inside.

That moment explained the entire tone of the community.

When developers are present, honest, and visible, players respond in kind. When care is obvious, entitlement fades. When stewardship replaces marketing, trust fills the gap.


Project Gorgon is not trying to be the biggest MMO.

It's trying to be something rarer: a place where meaning hasn't been optimized out of existence.

Other MMOs decided that friction was unnecessary. That waiting was bad. That preparation was boring. That identity should be declared upfront and never questioned. That travel was a waste of time. That everything should be accessible, immediate, and explained.

In removing those "unnecessary" things, they also removed memory.

Project Gorgon puts them back.

Not as nostalgia.
As philosophy.


I'm excited to learn this world. I'm excited for holiday events. For new friends. For raids. I'm excited to be steamrolled seven times in a row by an elite mob just to finally understand how it works.

I'm excited to be a wizard.
And a paladin.
And a cartographer.
And a gardener.
And a storyteller.

All at once.

Not because the game told me I could--but because it never told me I couldn't.

I didn't just find a new game. I found a reminder of what these worlds were always meant to do for us.

And somehow, quietly, patiently, Project Gorgon remembered us--even when we thought the industry had forgotten.
