Is this one of those games that, if your player dies, you lose all the progress with that player and need to start over with a new player? Like Slay the Spire and X-CON?

Hello, I wonder how this compares? I dont really like the randomness of SoD2, almost complete lack of story and goal. Like in Days Gone for example, it had progresion, missions, and you played as same guy. I googled a bit and some replays say that SoD1 is more plot/story focused, is this true? How does it play? just like second game, find a base and start builing, going to mission and send people to rest, take new people and do it again?...

I just reached level 12 and I started losing some of my original characters (from the very first level) due to the difficulty. I was wondering whether when your last character dies you get a game over screen or it will just give you a random character like in story mode and you can keep going forever.
