Nightmare Kart created a great formula for such a specific game.

This game promised nothing and delivered a lot. First impressions were really awkward since I didn't know what to expect from a racing game with vehicular combat and Souls-like elements, but it provided a really enjoyable and fun time. It could have easily been priced, and it still would have had success, but I think the free-to-play model also helped it because the content is limited, and you can only get more of it from NG+ playthroughs.

The graphics are simple, nothing crazy, but follow gothic standards and its monotone color palette. The designs are detailed enough, but important characters could have more discerning features. Maps are cool and well designed, and I liked that every area on them is playable, especially in boss arenas. I also enjoyed the soundtrack.

The gameplay is fun af. It's Mario Kart on steroids with different events to play through, not only typical racing. One flaw it has, or maybe it even plays into the game's business model, is the fact that I only got good at the game by the end of my first run, "forcing" me to play some NG+ runs just because of how great it felt gameplay-wise.

There are karts, characters, and weapons to unlock, although somewhat limited. The story is not the best, nor is it the most in-depth. It follows the souls-like standards, and at least it has good pacing by being explored at the beginning and after every race, but it could be better written and with a lot more content.

This game suffers from having zero expectations (since it's free) and from being so fun, leaving you wanting for more.
