Free Hunt

Hi Hunters,

I'm excited to announce the addition of a free hunt mode to Public Land Hunter. This is a game mode for players to have a casual experience on a larger map without the pressure of a clock. Please see below for details.

Added:

- Free hunt mode where players can enter a larger map with no time limit and hunt all species except for ducks. This was a common request from players who wanted to have a relaxing time with the game instead of feeling the pressure of the clock. This really resonated with me since a game should be fun and not stressful. Players can still challenge themselves with all the timed hunts but this is a way for players to kick back with something more casual when they just feel like shooting a few things. All kills in this mode count towards unlocks in the cabin. With the removal of a time limit the deer patterning is a little different. Instead of bedding deer will wander onto the map to feed and then wander off. You can still target the acorns they are feeding on but to help you can also now press the trigger when the binos are on a deer to call it in towards you. Note - the deer caller is only available in free hunt mode.

- Pond fishing game in the free hunt. Locate the small pond near the entrance to the free hunt and play a simple fishing game to relax. 10 fish in a row earns the player a new outfit.

- New NPC Gator. Gator is the resident expert and will now allow the player to either skip or reset the intro tasks. This serves two purposes. One, is to allow players that don't want to be content gated to jump to having everything unlocked. The other, is to fix and glitches in progress players experienced after the last patch. The previous patch opened up the ability for the task progression to break when selecting certain weapons or mini games ahead of schedule. If a player is currently missing an NPC or access to a weapon (except the scoped rifle, this is still unlocked from trophy buck kills) then they can speak to Gator to either restart the tasks or just jump to everything being unlocked. Note, this has no effect on kill counts for unlocks.

Bug Fixes:

- Aiming while accessing the computer will no longer cause a crash
- Players can no longer access the weapons in the cabin ahead of time, subsequently breaking task progression
- Corrected a few sound errors
- Removed two lines of code that were causing a graphical glitch

4 Bug Fixes and a small change to the fishing camera (testing it out)

1. There was a chance the player could accidentally skip the dialogue that triggered Slim and Frank coming to camp. I have changed the trigger for that so they should spawn in for anyone that has completed a horseshoe game. I also added a backup trigger to the horseshoe game for one bug report where a player was stuck there, hopefully that solves their issue.

2. There was a crash that would sometimes happen on spawning deer due to a math problem with the spawn chances. I have fixed the error I found which will hopefully cause those crashes to stop. Keeping my eye on that one.

3. Albino deer hit animation - the albino deer was drawing from the pie bald object when hit so it wasn't running wounded like it should. I believe this also caused some crashes on a successful Albino kill because the animal would just keep running instead of staying on screen. It would then get destroyed and the game wouldn't be able to access its code.

4. The spawn rate of the Albinos was also drawing from the pie bald numbers which meant a much greater chance of spawning them, and them spawning earlier in the deer meter than they should. They will now only spawn when the meter is full, and have a 10% chance of spawning.

5. When I was making changes tonight the fishing camera got messed up and then I realized it was actually kind of cool. The camera now zooms in a bit and follows the fishing lure. I really like elements of it because it adds some weight and action to the fishing. However, the one thing I'm not sure about is the camera is a little jumpy when bringing the lure up near the surface without a fish on. I'm open to feedback on that when people have tried it out.

That's all for tonight. I need to mark essays now. Oof.

Known Issues: The List of current balance and bugs that will be fixed

This is the current list of balance and bugs that are on my radar and will be addressed. Bugs: Priority High: - Potential memory leak on the duck hunt. Will test for cause / solution. Balance: Priority High: - Quail hunt NPCs too difficult. Firs step will be to turn down their range a little and bump up the speed at which they shoot....

How do you start unlocking more hunts?

I've got about 3 hours in now, and have got rabbit, boar and dear hunting. Are there specific tasks to complete to get the bird hunting unlocked? Loving the game!

Steam Cloud Saves

Hello, I have been enjoying playing your game (especially on Steam Deck) I was wondering if you have any plans to implement Steam Cloud Saves on the game so that the save can transfer from PC to Steam Deck and vice versa (as well as having a nice backup in the cloud)?...
