I have been meaning to write a review for this game for a long time now. Life has ways of tossing various sized monkey wrenches my way that managed to keep me from getting around to writing this review. But hey, better late than never!

I was born in 1984, during the "take-off phase" of the frontier of computing and gaming. And sure enough, I was around to be exposed to games like Prince of Persia, Wolfenstein3D/Spear of Destiny, Doom, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and so on. Playing all sorts of these games back then and now brings quite the unique feeling of nostalgia.

I honestly believe that the rocket ride through computing and gaming is still going on strong, I say this because this game, Supplice, not only allowed me to feel that nostalgia again, but gave me the sense of awe and wonder I felt when I was a kid. This is because I was amazed at pretty much everything Supplice had to offer; the lore, story, enemies, atmosphere, environmental design, weapon design, map design, effects, pretty much everything! One thing that I really like is the method that was used to project the lore and story through exploration rather than strictly objectives using terminals/consoles. I am sure that this isn't for everyone, but I am one of those gamers that actually enjoys reading up the lore and story in games. I also like how the story unfolds via chapters; which is a very nice way to pace the story. Couple this with a very well designed atmosphere and environments, it makes the lore and stories even more worth it. The weapon designs and animations were unique and very well done. Another aspect I love is the use of friendly units and turrets (I'm the kind of gamer that loves to take the path of having minions and equipping said minions with the best gear, and friendly units and deployable turrets do scratch that itch some).

I do look forward to seeing how the remaining Chapters are done. Hell, I even hope and look forward to seeing DLC content be done for this game.

To the devs: Keep up this fantastic work!

The levels are interesting, if overlong. The lore is very well written. The music is REALLY good for a boom-shoot. You can really tell there's a lot of passion behind this from a lot of experienced doom modders.

The weapons are just OK, the monsters as well, and they love dropping a ton of monsters behind you from a monster closet. IMO, the first episode was the most fun, and the design / drive to play suffered after that. I probably won't finish Supplice, as much as I want to.

Solid experience, but if you're not already a boomer shooter fan, this probably isn't going to be the one to change your mind. Love doom mods and wanna support a passion project? Then it's worth the money.
