Any easy way to tell before putting gold into it, if a char is worth upgrading?

If you have a team with 5 mud shields does that make something resembling 100% physical damage resistance where only certain bosses/traits do serious physical damage? Or does it take off 20% from incoming damage, then 20% off the remaining, and so on? One way is near 100%, the second way is near 66%. If it is the second method of calculation then steely could increase the resistance to near 75%. Whichever way it is, I plan to put this on a team of Phoenix, I've always been a defensive type player....

this feature alone takes the fun out the game for me. Where is the idle portion of the game? Add maybe a talent skill you can pick up with maybe 5million to keep spd at 80. Honestly having to click this before it drops to 60% doesn't = skill ... it does = a tedious not needed feature....

So I read about fusing and it seems people talk a lot about fusing the main tank, especially when it's a legendary or master level monster. They also fuse any monsters that are going to be in their end-game team(s), even if it's not the main tank. But on the way to getting that team built up, do we also fuse the monsters that are pretty much just the temporary place-holders until we get to that point of the end-game team? eg let's say I still have my Sphinx from the D1 in my team as a DPS unit.
