Who is Bessie Coleman?

Bessie Coleman (1892–1926) was the first African American and first Native American woman to earn a pilot’s license.

Because flight schools in the United States refused to teach her due to racism and sexism, she traveled to France to train and received her international pilot’s license in 1921.

Known as “Queen Bess,” she became famous for her stunt flights and inspired generations to pursue aviation despite barriers.
