Crystals are basically all over the map in small groupings. The mountain at the center of the map has some as does the snow mountains. There also is a crystal cave underneath the central mountain that has crystal but a grappling hook or phoenix is the best to harvest that. I have always told people to spawn on the east coast. The southern jungle has a lot of predators.

I did not find a single crystal node in the ocean. I only found crystal at high elevations where the only way to get there on land is to run a gauntlet of dozens of nasty carnivores. I was pretty disappointed that I didn't see any in locations more accessible to land mounts.

The best land locations for crystal are probably the desert and both snow biomes, but you can also get them from some of the hidden small caves around the map and by harvesting gem nodes (redwoods biomes are good for this) Larger quantities are on mountaintops as you'd mentioned and in caves. Can definitely add a few more easily accessible locations for next update :)
