I mean, you have supply Kubelwagens and Willys Jeeps, and it's reasonable that they would have all the passenger space used up to carry crates of ammo and jugs of fuel, but no space to store reserve soldiers.
And while there's an argument regarding on why we can't have the bigger trucks like the Opel Blitz or the DUKW trucks also supplying soldiers, we have to bear in mind that it's difficult to store passengers when you're using up every available space in the truck bed and possibly cabin with crates and drums.
That said, there SHOULD be a dedicated infantry reinforcement vehicle, maybe a truck full of "spare" soldiers. ...Then again, those very soldiers could just be a whole squad of infantry anyway.
Maybe we should have some sort of FOB where we can send a transport to pick up a squad and bring them back to be resupplied and reinforced, without spending points on a new squad. Or for Airborne units like the Fallschirmjagers or Paratroopers, you could send in a troop transport plane and have them parachute nearby to reinforce the squad. Or hell, just do the same to drop a fresh squad entirely, like REAL paratroopers!
This would change some of the battle flow slightly, but other than that I see the reinforce mechanic as a function of convenience and unit longevity. It sucks losing starred units. Not to mention you would be reinforcing them closer to the front, meaning they can stay in the fight rather than having to wait for a new unit to move into position.
The points you made MS were all very good and true. Perhaps it was just as simple as the developers making that assumption. That's fine, I get it. That's why I think your idea of a dedicated reinforcement vehicle (which will perhaps cost less than a new squad anyway) is a good one.
And as Citadel pointed out in private conversation, the idea behind this mod does more than just add guys to your units. It lets you create basically an FOB, or a foward supply depot. You can have trucks, defended, in your area that you can anchor your forces around. It adds tremendous importance on your supply trucks, giving honor to the Red Ball Express guys who hardly ever get recognized.
But given the game alternative is single men fighting to the death, that's not realistic either. I'd rather see a way to reinforce in game as a simplification of quite complex logistics.
It might be reinforcemetn of units should clock through teh units you've yet to deploy of that type? So they are coming from your existing reserves?
Not convinced by letting gun crews be reinforced though, that's very powerful.
And it's not nice to see a squad destroyed.
This would force a few things. You would need to keep damaged squads alive while rotating them out using your supply trucks. While that unit is gone you are down troops and you have to hold the same area so your truck can arrive safely. You cannot redirect the truck if you send it for a resupply and a squad rotation.
Additionally, it would make the map road even more important as your shiping goods back and forth to the front. Air strikes upon supplies could become even more of a thing, Say round trip the truck takes about three minutes, that will feel like a really damn long time. It would balance out the need to not make resupplying OP, while still weakening you for twice as long as before.
Frankly the Surrender Mechanic in this game needs work, as a emplacement that surrenders cannot be used despite a fresh group of soldiers having recaptured it. Same with tanks, it sucks we can't just call in a fresh tank crew to man that unmanned tank over there. Anyways, thank you for this mod.
gun crew replenish as normal no matter how many men they lost but there's still 1 intact it will able to recover to full.
keep in mind that tanks, fighting vehs, SPGs should be able to full repair using Engineer team(not the one they call Sappers/Engineer w/ satchels or flamethrower). a sole purpose Engineer that focusing on repair & also help resupply *faster* when a truck in aura on them (although in fact Engineer needs the spare parts mostly from a carrier stuff like Universal Carrier from BritBong, trucks, other light to heavy unique veh)
in any other RTS simulator it is logical & normal or a "must" have kind type of support
having these stuff around not make this unbalanced/OP, more like logical, rational, & balancing >totally not a menace to ORI ver
