I think I'm most interested in the idea of this mod having its own story, and find myself very curious about the army of Hannahs, because I've been spamming Hive Minds since Utopia dropped. I can't help but wonder; is she an Biological AI? A cybernetic expirament gone wrong? A virus? So may questions...
If I was going to suggest something, it would currently be the idea to create more "factions", basically other empires using the same races, with slightly different colors/armors/ethos. And other than that, perhaps a slight tweak to the Crisis factions, to work them into the storyline, and possibly work them into the more colorful art style?
As for other possible portraits, maybe do ones based on "supposedly" seen aliens from real life; like the Hopkinsville Goblins, Flatwoods Monster, Dover Demon, Enfield Horror, Van Meter Visitor, Giant Space Brains of Palos Verde, Pascagoula Elephant Men, Zanfretta's Aliens, etc. Sorta of a "Retro" themed sci-fi portrait pack based on these supposedly seen aliens would be very interesting along with including retro looking ship sets based on UFO sightings. :)
With respect to future portaits, perhaps something lovecraftian might be interesting. A being that holds fewer bipedal qualities and might appear to be more akin to the 'Elder Thing' in lovecraftian lore (No resemblance to humans being the general theme of the suggestion).
when i get my bearings straigh i to plan to work on an undead-like portrait as well; im not sure about a non humanoid lovercraftian portrait, as i am really fond of humanoid aliens in general. if i get a good idea i will do it but i cant make promises on that one
