Do I need my surgeon companion in the actual battle?
Or any other intellect companions in battle for their stats to apply? I'm just tired of microing Ansen every battle to make sure he doesn't get knocked out.

Unfortunately yes which is a good argument on why players make themselves the surgeon.

Usually you will be outnumbered so they will join the battle no matter what position they are in your party list...

Well yeah, unless I have like 500 fully trained CKO troops on top of the list and my battle size is set to 100. Then they might not join the battle after all. And the question here is whether I should put Ansen on top or not.

Give him ranged weapons and good armor does help with his survivability.

Make them a separate battle group and order them to hold position near the flag.
