Yeah well that is meant to happen if you stand infront of him. I'm not sure what is happening if you stand behind him and you can't hear the 'gunpouder' though - As I am not the author. It happens in VR or single player if you want to try it out, just go into 3rd person and press alt to look around..

This is when either you or your friend don't have matching sound mods. Either he doesn't have JSRS enabled, doesn't have them in the same load order, or he has other sound mods enabled as well. To test it, make sure you both disable all mods, then enable ONLY JSRS and see if it works fine. Some weapon mods will override the gun sounds that JSRS applies and will cause issues as well.

This is a common problem that occurs if you don't have all the exact same weapon mod packs installed. Check your modlist against your friend's, there's a good chance their modlist has differences, and there's an even better chance it's from discrepancies between you two with regards to weapon packs installed.

JSRS doesn't cause this issue as far as I know, as if you have it installed and they don't, they'll just hear vanilla sounds and you'll hear the JSRS-enhanced ones (at least I'm fairly certain).
