I think it uses rocks to tame them. Check the wiki

normally you shoot them in the head with canons, you also can use rockets. i tried that out several times yesterday (also with admin commands) but it seems that the torpor of the rock elementals are buggy at the moment in this mod because it doesn't go up no matter what you do.
