Hi, mostly its for historical reasons, its not really necessary to research both. However it is not possible with this mod to assign specific tank types to a battalion, it just fills up with available medium tanks unless you as a player exclude a certain tank type in equipment in the designer. But the exclusion is only for whole divisions not for individual battalions ... meaning you can have e.g. Panzer III divisons OR Pz IV divisions but not a certain 50/50 mix ( unless coincidentally by producing exactly same ratio ).
