I don't think I can't even capture keystrokes from within the wallpaper. But in the version I have been working on ( and the version that has been delayed for over a year already ), there is the option to turn on controls which would allow you to switch to the next/previous image, as well as the option to click on a filename in the playlist window there is now. I just have no clue when I will be ready to put it up on steam.

Yes, like that. Controls are only visible if the mouse is near the edge of the screen. Includes prev/next/play/pause options. But still need to do some testing before i put the update online. Been working on it forever and never seem to manage the to finish the update.

Sure I can give an update. The work on the update has been a very slow burn to the point it stalled ( I mean its been 2 years now ). I am still very busy but a recent bug report in the current version has gotten me to pick up working on it again and I think it's close to being ready. Coincidence have it that I even fixed a bug in it yesterday. I kinda hope to have the update out in a month or two. Trying to find a moment where I have enough time to upload it but then also have time to respond quickly to any bug reports that I might get after the update and not have to say "i'm too busy" again.
