I saw you wanted some suggestions for the small ship sizes, so my suggestion is to have the following:
1x1, 2x2, 1x2, 2x1, 1/2x1, 1x1/2, 1x1/4, 1/2x1/4, 1/4x1, 1/4x1/2, 3x3, 3x2, 3x1, 1x3, 2x3, 4x1, 4x2, 4x3, 4x4, 3x4, 2x4, 1x4, 1x5, 2x5, 3x5, 4x5, 5x5, 5x4, 5x3, 5x2, 5x1, and sloped (meaning less than full blocks; corners of different angles) version of the 2, 3, 4 and 5 sizes, and 45degree and 22.5 degree angles for every one of those mentioned above (for better-looking ships).

Some people are into small ships, and the large panels can be done by putting together more smaller panels, and 5x5 is, I think, a good enough size for a small ship.
