Do you need hamachi, if so how do i use it?
Tried starting a server with a friend and hosted it normally, then sent him my ip address. The connection was tried but eventually failed. Do i need hamachi to allow him to join or something. Really not sure how to use it if thats the case.

Yes you do need it. I found out after a while of messing around.

It's easy though. Both people need hamachi. Whoever wants to create the session then has to go to network>>create new network. Should open a box with the name and password which you must create (can be anything, just make it recognisable). Then your friends can join by clicking network>>join existing network and fillin gout the network id and password you just created.
