Boggles me as well since there shouldn't be any logical conflict between these two.
Only thing I can think of is that some of the storage units added in can't be properly added/shown in the resource tab to spawn alongside your pawns on start.
So if anyone has the same problem, just load ES after you start the game.
(Also, I realise I'm coming in a bit late to this discussion NOW, but the last new game I started was at about the right time for the discussion above, so it still seems like a potentially relevant data point.)
I already have a bit of a lag without ES with all of my other mods but it's 1-2 seconds at most, but with ES added it just goes into frozen loading mode forever, it might be that total amount of things added just overflows game so much that it crashes before it has time to fully load up and open prepare carefully.
The 8 ES cotaniers, generally, can be Woody or Metallic, so adding material mods will cause the permutations Prepare Carefully has to calculate to increase.
