It seems the cost of ethanol is too high. You get 1 ethanol out of 8 berries, costing ~$8 total. Ethanol costs more than $100. And Glitterworld medicine, which contains a lot of it, costs less than it requires ethanol to produce.
Perhaps you missed that you make 5 ethanot out of 40 berries, when you counted the cost?
