Hearts of Iron IV: The Great War

Is Korea intended to be unplayable, or am I just bad?
I'm certainly not an expert player, but I've played enough CK2, Stellaris, and general grand strategy to know my way around once I learn the more specific mechanics of HOI4.

But Korea in this mod is just... wew. You start off being immediately slapped by the annexation treaty of 1910 from japan. Now I assume that accepting it just causes game over, because annexation. Then you have to defend against their (laughably easy) naval invasions for 3-4 years while you try to build up enough units, and build enough ships to get naval supremacy and invade Japan.

By the time you do this, even if you're fast and successful, WWI will start.

And you will get dragged into the war because Japan joins the Entente, and then everyone joins japan's war, and it' s merged into the Great War.

And then you lose.

Yeah Korea is better off if you play Japan for the first bit, annex them, then release and play as.

That bad, huh?

Yikes.

I've tried 3 times now, including once in mp with a friend playing portugal.

Every single time, if I refuse the annexation it immediately becomes a war that is effectively impossible to win before Japan joins the entente, resulting in me getting invaded by, at minimum, russia from the north, forcing me to divert troops to contain that border.

Then even if I capitulate japan, I'm still forced to be a part of the great war, and eventually UK and France (at minimum) will liberate japan, and invade me, because I simply cannot train and produce enough to fight them all navally and on beaches, as Korea's ship industry is literally ♥♥♥♥ all.

Well historically speaking, Korea was screwed from the start after the early 1900's. Just do what the above guys said to do, ahistorically... start as Japan and release, save the game then reload but click on Korea instead... and there you go.

I understand what happened to Korea historically. I am relatively familiar with asian history from the 1900s onwards. It, and my heritage are one of the reasons I often play nations like Korea in games, when possible.

I'm aware of how to fix the issue by cheating, I was just wondering if there was any other way to do it. If not, I'd say that's pretty poor nation design. There ought to be some focuses or events which allow you to force an end to the war after a period of time, or allow you to invade Japan earlier, such as capturing a fleet in harbour or being supported by a nearby power etc.

Or even just forcing a stalemate with Japan before 1914 kicks off.

You don't even have to reload the save, you just have to click "play as" when you release it after annexing. That way there's no cheating or anything, just playing as a releasable.
