This disappoints me. I'm sorry, but i went to use it today from having a long hiatus and it made me sad.
I also had no choice back then, it was either that or no ladders, because I had no way of reading input other than getting the view matrix which isn't really input, it's the result of input.
This is how I wanted to do it initially but I couldn't.
The jumping part was merely a consequence of the fact that the character had a point under the feet that needed to hit the ladder's invisible hitbox, I did that because I didn't want people to be grabbed by ladders when walking by them since I had no way to read if use is pressed and didn't want to use dampeners or jetpack or some obscure existing functionality that I read being on or off...
But since then, I changed that point into a line from the feet to the chest so you can now grab ladders that are at chest-level and feet-level, that wasn't possible before which made grabbing ladders that were above ground (like on ships) really awkward.
There was also an issue where you grabbed the ladder under a catwalk and silly stuff like that.
And as I said in my previous post, simply hold the USE key and you'll basically auto-grab the first ladder you run into.
You should configure the game to be comfortable for you, if T is not comfortable to reach then maybe you should change the game's controls instead... or you can assign a different ladder-interaction key/button in the config.
A few SE updates ago, the "use" control has been set to F as default. I always had F for use and V for terminal and they're really easy to access in a WASD stance.
In case you're confused by the relative-to-camera controls, you can disable that in the config, 'false' will make them relative to ladder which means they'll go the same direction no matter where you're looking.
