Depends on which ending you want to achieve. For the 'best' ending, the full set is required in order to get past the radiation poisoning. (or unless you have a really large amount of health to go through while getting past the time it takes for the dialogue to finish)

Aside from the immunity to radiation poisoning, that's pretty much all the advantage there is. And it also looks shiny, so there's that.
