But, what info would you say you'd need from an existing block ? I can only think of one right now, the block's custom name so you can find it easily in the control panel, but apart from that ?
Personally I would be fine with first two from approximate list below :)
custom name
mod name
current mass
airtight status of the 'face' that you are looking at
Run time stats depending on block type:
energy/fuel consumption, output force, atmospheric efficiency for thrusters
range limits/speed for pistons & rotors
used capacity for containers
timer status, countdown
currently used oxygen/hydrogen capacity of gas holding blocks (cockpit, tanks)
etc.
Can't get the welder/grinder's target but I can get a block that's in front of you at a variable range, however it's a cell scan so if you're looking at a block that has an interior light on it, it will get the interior light if you're aiming through the light's cell.
But I adjusted for that with an 1m scan starting distance, therefore if you go up close to the block you'll scan starting from the other cell and therefore get the block behind it.
So currently it has a 1m to 7m distance scan, easily adjustable.
That said, I've complicated myself with wanting to make a hand-held LCD, but the current problem is I can't quite get the left hand rotation right and even if I do there's going to be the issue with the fingers as they have a fixed animation... also the fingers on the left hand for the cube placer are broken drastically.
So far I've made a fake hand that holds it but when you're jumping you can see your actual left hand so it's a 3-hand weirdness going on...
And on top of that, I'm adding a feature that when you're in cockpits and have a welder or grinder selected in the toolbar (I hope this works on MP too xD) it will show what block you're aiming at and its components (missing or installed, depending on the tool).
It's also using the camera as aim so you can look around and inspect blocks without rotating the ship.
As for the actual stats, I'm still working on them XD the LCD left hand thingie has been using all my time xD
