Hey darlin', I'm not sure exactly what your question is but here is my advice:

There are two kinds of benches in KOTORII: Lab stations (where you can use "chemicals" to create things) and Workbenches (used to modify your gear)

When you first click on a workbench you should have an option to read
<Learn about>
<Use to upgrade>
<Use to create or breakdown>
<Leave>

I suggest you read the learn about and it should help explain how you can use them to upgrade your gear and weapons.
