NEW (v3) - Barbarian Settings File
There is a new file called BEsettings.lua in the following location:

Documents\My Games\Civ 5\MODS\Barbarians Evolved (v3)\

It can be opened with notepad (it's just a text file with a different extension). It is a pointer to one of four variations on the settings file, pre-set for certain mod combinations.

Here's the contents of the settings file:

-- Change this to one of four strings (NO EXTENSION!): -- -- BEsetVanilla - the standard experience -- BEsetMinimal - the most minimal impact (mostly behavioral changes) -- BEsetCBP - for use with the Community Balance Patch -- BEsetWhiteWalkers - if you want the functional equivalent of the White Walkers -- BEsetPersonalized - try your own changes here -- -- Look in BEsettings_Personalized.lua for a description of what everything does. include("BEsetMinimal")

What do I change?

1. Change the include statement - that very last line - to point at the right settings file (Vanilla, CBP, White Walkers or Minimal).

2. Make whatever additional changes you need to in that particular file. Ideally, you don't have to make any additional changes at all!

The Personalized file is mainly there for people who want to go 100% custom. It is fully commented with crazy amounts of text explaining what everything does. If you don't understand what all the settings do, the explanation is in Personalized.

When should I change this?

You should change this if you are using a DLL mod, or if you want the Barbarians to act like White Walkers, or if you want to craft your own personal twist on Barbarians Evolved.

The only thing I couldn't really put into a settings file is the color of Barbarians. So if you really want your White Walkers to be white, you have to do a little XML editing or use the White Walkers mod.

Change the string in the file BEsettings.lua to read as follows:

include("BEsetWhiteWalkers")

That's it.

Can someone help me? I'm confused on what file I should edit. If anyone can help me, I'll be very thankful.

I thought I explained things pretty well.

Edit BEsettings.lua to point at the settings file you want to use.

If you want to customize things beyond the three options (CBP, vanilla, whitewalkers) then pick BEsetPersonalized.lua and read the comments to understand what all the settings do.

I can't open the file up to change it to BEsetCBP, I have file viewer lite which opens it in a text format that I cannot change anything. Why can't you make the changes yourself? I don't have a clue even after reading everything 20-30 times and downloading links that downoad to some place that I haven't found yet. I have spent 4 days on this and I'm getting pretty fed up with it. If you make a mod then you should have a choice of mods with all the changes already done. I am not a techie and don't have the time for this kind of thing so please find some way that I can use this mod. It would be highly appreciated. Thank you

It's a text file. Use notepad. This isn't hard at all.

The reason I can't give you ONE option is because the option applies to everyone who downloads the mod. One size does not fit all. So I set a default (Vanilla) that covers most cases, and created a few files to cover edge cases (CBP, White Walkers).

Added some more helpful commentary to original post.

It's very rough right now but the next version of BE will likely do away with the settings file and move the configuration inside the game itself. No more tinkering with files.

Hello, first off, I want to thank you on this phenomenal mod. Great work, it's helped revitalize my interest in civ.

However, I'm trying to use MPMPM Multiplayer Mod Workaround to compile a pack so I can use mods without going into the mod section and perhaps even multiplayer. Therefore I'm using the BE SETTING notepad file with the include string.

I'm having issues with the fact that no matter what I include there is no change. I'll include BEsetWhiteWalkers and even delete the other setting lua files and when I load the mod there are no white walkers.

Once when I just used custom settings, the barb civ worked just fine and got really strong but the barbs could walk on water even though I did not give them the hover promotion. How could I fix this?

I'm wondering, could I try v3 out in case v4 removed the functionality of the notepad settings? Could you offer any help? I would love to enjoy this mod to its full potential. Thanks!

v4 didn't remove the functionality of the notepad settings... I just provided a front-end to edit them between loading and applying them (that's a simplification but there you go). Without using the front-end, you should get what's in the lua file selected. Except, you don't. So... i'm confused.

My suggestion would be to start FireTuner and look at the lua log. There should be heaps of debugging info printed there.

Thanks, I play a lot of custom senarios which means I can't just use the usual method to tweak the barbarians. I do love the idea of playing around with them to make them act differently though.

@Charsi Did you remove the heathen conversion reformation belief, because I went down piety exactly because of it and I couldn't find it. And how do I reenable it?

Hey Charsi, I like to play this with raging barbarians on, but on the difficulties i like it makes the barbs too strong. How do I get a "watered down" Raging Barbarians mode? like if RB has + 100% spawn rate, how do I get + 50% spawn rate?

Does this work with Vox Populi (latest version)? I read online that people use it with VP and it works fine, but when I try to load up a game with VP and this, it screws up a few crucial aspects: I permanently have -11 gpt at the start of the game for no reason, so it's impossible to get above +0 science...
