Could you extend what type of weaponry they can use?
I'm not very versed in LUA(or any programming for that matter), but would it be possible to make it so the NPCs can at the very least use all of the default weaponry(like the crossbow, and RPG)?

Extend their weaponry is related to SWEPs itself, SWEP developers can make thier SWEPs compatible with NPCs with a few lines of codes.
Hopefully, Garry's Mod Development Team made Garry's Mod compatible with over 50% of currently incompatible SWEPs. You can try it by opt in to beta channel.
