umm what helped me was playing total war games and other MB mods with better AI and AI army control but i know thats not much help. Also it looks like a game like MB (Caribbean) is gonna have a fight system like this not the same though but its still in dev.

If you mean the Ship System from Carbibean, you can also just play the "The Deluge" mod for Warband.

A tip would be doing missions. They are just about everywhere. The rebel forts are a bit difficult for new comers but offer a good 10,000 money. Bandit hideout are very good as well. And offer 3,500 money if you win. There are also delivery missions that are vey simple and offer 10,000 money. Now the farm mission can be diffuclt on the way you choose to defend them.One gives you a bow and sets you on the roof. I havent won this one time yet. So i choose the first choice it gives you, this sets you in the house and is much easier, it offers 3,500 as well. The caravans can be difficult as well if you dont have decent armor and a good sword. I avoided the caravans until i could take a few hard hits. I forgot how much this offers for money.
