Its there in case a player gets pushed off the elevator. There is no need for a player to go back down there.
If you could take a screenshot it would help, i might be thinking of the wrong one.

Luckily when I tried to googled if anyone else had a similar issue, the game decided I was idle, made my character a bot, and teleported me (well, my character) out of there. Still, seems like a bug.
Teleportation in gordon's suit chamber is escapable if you run around and find invisible teleporter back to lobby.
