Strangely it works for me. I just started playing this game today.

I really wanna play it, but I can't if it doesn't even let me set up CPU battles

For anyone who doesn't know, in the command line beneath the mod selection menu before you launch the game, enter the code for your resolution.
For example, mine would be "-w 1920 -h 1080" without the quotation marks.

what happens if your game crashes when you try to start the vs cpu game?

The game closes without an error message etc.
