is the only way to play with multiplayer?

I been having the same thing, I hope there will be a fix for it.

My game also crashes when I start up war games. I played around and tried to fix the problem myself, if not the source of the problem and when I played in windowed mode; I got this message box while loading war games in windowed mode: Error: loading research file (data:scripts\Building and Research\Invalid\research.lua). Hopefully the developers for Homefront can fix this because we would all like to play Homefront. For now I can't even play the mod except be on the menu of the game.

I have been trying to figure out why I cant play the mod at all except the tutorial missions. There seems to be no back button either on the menu. The mod is completely unplayable for me.

I got war games to work so I can play skrimishes and what not. When your in the war games menu, look at the game players box. Should look somewhat like this, tried my best:

It looks like the game is good to go. But the colum 'Race' is blank, so it looks like there is not option. Click on either the arrow under race, or where the blank space (I placed a star under Race) is and the game fractions should appear. Select UNSC or Covenant and you're set to go.

I spent 5 hours trying to solve this "problem" and the solution was so simple... I feel dumb but very grateful @Spike.
