Joining the Legion
I decided to enlist in the Roman army for the beginning part of my playthrough. Do you ever get into combat with other armies? The AI seems to go on the same path avoiding every looters and bandits along the way.

I presume you mean with roman army -> Roman Empire faction? In that case yes, the AI is somewhat bugged as it has no direct border to fight on. For that reason it's generals will follow certain paths and do little.

For the action I would recommend joining some of the frontline generals who own forts close to an enemy tribe for example.

would make sence, romans valued millitary service, to get political ranks you needed to serve the roman army for certain amounts of time
