similar issue. chainswords dont count as melee weapons for pawns with brawler perk causing them to lose mood

The author wrote before that its because of the bullet type the bolters have. Since they are explosive they can't be used for hunting. I remember him suggesting for now just use other weapons for hunting

@HamesTheNames ah, thanks dude. That's a shame, maybe there could be a 40k weapon that isn't explosives that can be used for hunting, would like to stay in the theme and not use regular ARs, lol.

Using bolters as hunting weapons is weird imo. Your prey would explode into little pieces. Just use a different weapon for your hunter.

Good point. A 75 caliber jet propelled APHE would probably take half the deer with it and shred most of the remainder. Although it would be tender meats

Honestly I don't think bolters should be explosive weapons. Sure they have a small explosive charge, but they aren't area-effect weapons like grenades or mortars that deal damage over a wide area, they only deal damage to the thing that they hit in primary sources. I'd say they should be normal weapons that only damage what they hit, but with very high damage. That alone has disadvantages for hunting since if you blow a body part off of an animal you get less meat.

I agreed in the beginning, but no, it would work just fine. Animal carcass being in pieces is easier to carry as well, it comes pre-cut.
It's not going to be minced, just a bunch of parts. But we can just visualize it as a single animal carcass imho. So yeah, bolters should be able to be used as hunter weapons.
