DONT promote your soldiers
if you promote soldier to companian , there is high risk you will break the game , will crash every time u go to battler , or if you try to get rid of them too fix> USE CONSOLE COMMAND TO KILL YOUR PROMOTE COMPANION , AND IT WILL BE FIXED

Running on a fresh install and promoted 3 companions so far, each different unit. Had no issues with them in multiple battles. Had no issues at all for 13+ hours since the fresh install.

what console command? I tried campaign.kill_hero [name] and it said hero didn't exist

I tried campaign.kick_companion and the game crashed

maybe it only crashes promoting a SPECIFIC UNIT?

For me it doesnt matter what unit is promoted, Usually a companion has a encyclopedia entry, these do not. So you might be able to play on the save until you load it. When the save is loaded the object references are missing.

Got the same issue. I figured it's the companion since i can't even view its equipment. Thanks for pointing that out!

Damn, i loved my Horse Archer Onna-Musha companion...

for me promoting them didnt actually affect anything, trying to dismiss a promoted unit caused a CTD every time though.

From my testing it seems like the promoted soldiers do not get a character page sometimes which causes crashes when they are used in battle or dismissed. The outdate yesterday does not seem to have fixed the issue, more like a bandaid for the few companions that got entrees.
