A good idea would be to automatically write news about the war every month (or bi-monthly) as if they had been sent by the BdU, with general information about the progress of the war as well as specific details about the submarine warfare. Thats a nice idea. I just don't know if it would fit the war journal because is radio messages from the bdu and I don't think they were logged IRL.
We could think about a separate mod though that sends radio messages at specific dates. What do you think?

I believe the other mod hasn't been working for many months. In any case, if one day you are willing to expand the features of the journal and add monthly news/messages from the BdU, I could write them.

Would generating entries for contacts whether surface or hydro make sense? Since you already have sinkings, you might as well have an entry for contacts or engagements. Not all engagements means you're going to have a sinking. So for example-

Received notice from Radioman of contact bearing 320degrees, 20km away.
Contact made and identified convoy of 2 merchant ships (Empire XX and Empire XY) with 3 escorts 2 corvettes, 1 Destroyer (Name of identified ships)
Sunk 1 escort
Sunk 1 merchant
