(Team OVN was waiting to port the halfling mod to tww3 since there's a theory there's gonna be an official halfling unit so they want to use those models)
but with a toolbelt of feyish nature themed abilities that function not far off from a caster (like exploding chestnuts or a debuffing cloud that uses spores or wasabi?)
Since you gave them mushroom shields it could be funny to add *Shroom Knights* with mushroom themed armor for some high survivability defensive infantry (or a hero?) and have them with a couple of weird abilities or passives based around mushrooms?
(regenerating infantry could be interesting though could just give them the *special ranged weapon* treatment? maybe with some sort of debuff to it or a contact effect)
Perhaps instead of direct infantry an armor piercing stealth infantry like the goblin Sneaky gits & Hobgoblin Cutthroats?
To differentiate them you could theme them around the old folklore of the "Redcap" where they get stronger via killed units/nearby deaths because they dip their caps in the blood of the fallen? (thinking on it.. you could add that to all the currently "redcap" named gnome units actually & give the assassins another ability?)
Definitely would like to see some ranged infantry preferably with special arrows? or perhaps blowdarts... could be interesting to see them apply some rarer contact effects via the idea being Potion-coated shots (hell actually... could make them "gnome alchemists")
In terms of ideas outside of new units.. i agree with the people who asked for them to be added to the Dwarfs (maybe empire too) & would it be possible to switch the gnome casters army buff to army replenishment? (fits them better i think.. though perhaps they could get both the option to do Both like some other heroes do?)
you could make him a glass cannon sort of character hits hard but cant really get hit just as hard. also give him vulnerable to fire damage because he is essentially a little dude riding around on a sentient potato sack.
you could make the little guy on top of him really old and decrepit like the village leader from willow or the grand nagus from star trek. give him a really big impressive staff that fires magic bolts similar to ostankia.
enchanted scarecrows would work really well with this idea give them frenzy and vulnerability to fire
also giving them a more eldritch looking tree man unit would be cool
also for other unit ideas you could do pixies as sort if there low tier flying swarm unit. or maybe an abilities that lowers all of the enemies melee defense down a tone sort of how the ark of sotek works. make them look how links pixie from occarina of time. you could even put the "hey listen" sound every time you click on them.

Granted *Fairies/pixies* would be super easy model wise.. just using a shrunken recolored Ariel model or wood elf spellsinger model with Ariels wings
(though tbh they'd make more sense as a caster/power generating unit than flying swarm unit)
