There should be an android in the medical station that will give you a mission to recover life pods. If you're on a multiplayer server, I'm not sure how it would handle it if someone had already run it prior.
edit: if its the one I'm thinking of in the darkmatter(?) field? There is another one that is in the middle of a normal asteroid field, with the occasional note complaining about the captain being reckless; that one is just loot

Yes, the second one, in normal asteroid field, really big and in a really bad shape, with tablets left by survivor in hydroponics bay.

That one is just loot, and a decent source of trade goods and speciality vendor stuff like communication equipment, robotics, thruster components outside of finding and unlocking said vendors, though it is reliant on RNG; you even have a small chance at encrypted schematics.

There's two things to find in that site, if you keep your eyes peeled you can follow the trail to the second thing.
