What happened?

That is honestly pretty strange considering Valve's hand's off approach towards content removal or blockage, I wonder why this decision ended up being made

Censoring the word can do a disservice to the real struggles people face and oversimplify a complex issue. Content providers must trust in the community's maturity and understanding in handling such topics. That weird censorship makes me more uncomfortable than "suicide" ever could.
