Shotguns don't suck , best thing on an engy after the sentry for damage. AND you don't have to set it up

Who the hell doesn't use a shotgun? You know what it's called if you crouch by your sentry, mindlessly hitting it with a wrench? TURTLING. A good engie fights alongside his weapons, and this is especially true if you have the gunslinger equipped. How are you gonna fight spies?
