Also, @Scatman The machete changes based on difficulty. Legendary will spawn two machetes and a dead elite to create the legendary symbol on the ground.
The skull is hidden under the Pelican. And I'm pretty sure picking up both machetes makes the energy sword appear. It's stuck in a rock near one of the terminals you have to activate.
Could be mistaken but I thought i heard a rendition of the Arbiter's theme playing.
Edit: Actually I don't think the machetes have anything to do with the energy sword. I played it again and it appeared after getting all the skulls. I think the song and legendary symbol is a separate Easter egg.
I used the agrophobia skull to get down there, unfortunately there's nothing at the bottom of the shaft. The shaft is extremely deep though, deeper than any chasm/shaft in the original game I think!
