Better in some ways, worse in others. 3/5 stars.

Summing up my thoughts on City of the Dead: Redux is tough. It easily beats the original on a technical level, especially in the visuals. It's well balanced, there's fun graffiti, and I love that the Survivors actually talk. But some of my biggest issues with City of the Dead are still present, and that's on top of new problems added to the redux.

Like last time, the fatal flaw is that these maps are dark and hard to navigate. Ironically, the lighting is vastly improved in the redux — but sometimes it's still not enough. In the first 2 maps, you often can't see anything outside the cone of your flashlight, and it's hellish in the expansive environments that lack memorable landmarks. The most unique area in the campaign is an indoor swimming pool, but it's just an optional dead end. The finale is also less exciting because zombies rarely get the high ground now.

There's good stuff here, but navigation might be too frustrating for some folks.

UPDATE: As of the August patches, this campaign is easier to navigate than it was when this review was written. There are more light sources and more arrows pointing you in the right direction. I still feel comfortable with my 3/5 score, but this campaign is better than it used to be and it's worth a try.
