A workaround is to make your firing positions diagonal, this way you can have two lines of people shooting, the rear one shoots betweem the shoulders of the firs one. Or maybe use CE's embreasures as they are a bit lower than seamless embreasures' embrasures, haven't tried that one thoug.
As for pawns switching weapons, you might be using simple sidearms. Pawns usually do that when engaged in melee, and if not check your weapons preferences. You can make a pawn chose a ranged or melee weapon by default, even mark a particular weapon as predetarmined.
Finally in regards to your broken savefile... LMAO noob, that's why use use backups and check for incompatibilities before adding major overhaul mods like CE. That's your fault. If a mod doesn't say that it's safe to add to an existing save, you asume it isn't.
