my thinking is they are the opposite of rat ogre's aggressive play. they are dwarf's fast and mobile tank units that could quickly fill in gaps in the line or disrupt and knock down the enemy.
That said I have buffed them again. I've given them 2 new passives, the first slightly buffs armor and physical resistance for as long as they're above 50% hp, the 2nd is a debuff that slowly builds up while in melee, reducing their defense but in exchange for more damage and even flaming attacks on the final tier. They now have a small amount of fire resist but that will go away if they spend too much time in melee. I did test them after these changes and they performed better than before, I think that's about as much of a buff I can really give them without them being too strong for their tier.
