Enemies in the tournament will be roughly on your level (calculated from you character level and equipment which ever is better), so you can have challenging but winnable fight. Reward will be one tier higher than units in the tournament, so reward should be an upgrade most of the time. Lords will be present only on the highest tier of the tournament so you need to get good if you want to fight them.
