For the map I use either

or

plus on top

I turn off the automatical industry spawn/decay options.
Yeah, I just did the same and started to tickle with hand placing industries.
A couple of nice seed I've used are DEVIL and Vietnam13884. Yeah, go figure.
Ratio is 4:1 Megalomaniac.
It gives me space and nice rivers flowing North to South.
I've added the Gloomy Autumn package too by the way.
Are you throwing any other mod into the mix ? DDR I guess ?
PS: if you are inclined to do so, I would be thrilled to try one of your map.I need some inspiration to spread my industries convincingly.
I use a huge bucket full of mods, so giving you the map could be a pita.
if that's not too much of pain, may you share some screenshots of your hand placed industries and cities ?
I'm looking for inspiration.
I just place raw resource plants into the wild where it fits and processing plants at the edge of industrial areas of towns or even within.
Very early stuff like sawmills I put a little outside of a town, but not too much.
Sometimes I place all roads by hand, sometimes I let the map editor do it but erase and rebuild long stretches of it.
I always delete and rebuild road bridges as the vanilla bridge building algorithm sucks.
Makes feel like to get to know more about industrial history of a place and build a map o fit.
Cheers
