Does it break already existing maps?
No not break other maps, I don't load to the world but I create new world and not have the mod active on the other maps?

to use this mod you need to make a new world , otherwise it will not work

if you load an existing world with this mod it will break, except you used the mod in this world before

Will the next chapter require a fresh play through or will the current Raft Mechanic save work when chapter 2 comes out?

Understood. Great mod and I did like finding the new custom locations, like the oil rig, so if a new world is required, not a problem.
