The cores spread to own territory + 1 system further. You need to conquer the chokepoints/systems that have a core to spread the nanite cores further across the galaxy.
It is like that for some challenge, otherwise you could continue to sit in your corner :D
ah then i see why its so hard for me to spread, as the crisis already took over a lot (like 50% of the galaxy) and taking it down would be unreasonable i kinda last minute switched to being the crisis (from everyone loved me, even during me being crisis i was still at max friendlyness level with most) and when killing crisis stations they despawn instead of me getting them, so i would have to manually conquer the universe 1 star at a time :P.
oh well it was still a fun game.
