But I think that if you make a mod dealing with things aside from socialism it should be a different mod from this, since most people are playing this to have socialist politicies.
Hello, thank you for the support, I understand my conception of socialism (state socialism) is not that of everybody but I don't believe it is not socialism. I also think it's the most plausible route for an elected government in the modern era (as in Democracy 3), we can see elements of these policies from leaders such as Corbyn.
Ultimately I decided to go with these policies for these reasons and because they seem to be the easiest fit with the existing engine of Democracy 3. I certainly could not institute reforms to for example eliminate the state in a game like this which relies on the player in the role of government.
However, I do accept that it might be nice to have some more reforms of the type you specified, but I will have to do some more research myself to understand them better. What would be your suggestions for some of these reforms to start with that would fit into the engine of this game?
I don't know if it is possible given the game mechanics, but I echo General Götterspeise's recommendation of including policies which are actually socialist, not state capitalist (so-called "state socialism" is just state capitalism with a different name). This might include a policy that encourages and incentivizes the development of worker cooperatives[en.wikipedia.org], or the replacement of currency with labor vouchers[en.wikipedia.org] for the domestic economy. The nationalization options could be replaced with socialization ones, or the socialization options could become available only after the manufacturing and banking have been nationalized, as advanced reforms.
If you want to complete this mod by including the conclusion of socialism—communism, since socialism is a transitional stage between capitalism and communism—you can include policies for investment in automation (this could be tied to the robotics investment policy under Economy), as well as final policies which include the abolition of money and the state. If the player is successful in transitioning to a fully communist society (which I seriously doubt unless they have 4+ terms), they could prematurely resign by officially abolishing the state itself.
Given that a fully implemented socialist society would entail the abolition of the state, the obsolescece of taxation, and the elimination of those special interest groups in favor of two groups of conflicting class interests (bourgeoisie/capitalists and proletariat/workers), I suspect that Democracy 3 simply lacks the necessary game mechanics to accommodate for a non-capitalist economic system. In that sense, modifying the game to handle socialist and communist systems would be as difficult, if not more so, as would modifying the game mechanics to simulate feudalism.
At the current stage, this mod certainly makes it easier for those with radical leftist predilections to resoundingly win without resorting to liberalism, but it fails to actually achieve any semblance of socialism. If your goal is indeed to do just that, you may need to significantly revise this mod. If not, it may be better to simply rename this mod to "Social Reform" or, if you insist on keeping the socialist label, "State Socialism".
